About

Mission

To help people make sense of a complex world with complex data.

About the Blog

BrewingData was launched in 2024 with the intention to help others understand real-world events and complex information using data-driven techniques, such as visualisation and predictive models. This blog was set up to demonstrate the power of data science as a technique for helping communicate valuable insights.

Why is this important? In a world filled with misinformation and fake news, it is all the more important to seek the truth and to make an informed decision based upon publicly-available information.

There is no specific agenda for what will and will not be featured in the blog, although, most of what you will see will be based upon what I'm interested in or topics I feel conformable talking about. This includes, but not limited to, the following topics:

  • Politics
  • Sports
  • Housing Market
  • Social Media

About the Author

I'm James Ashford, and I'm the creator of BrewingData. I have a PhD in computer science with 5+ years experience with working with data, both as a student and as a postdoc. Not only that, but I have a passion for helping others understand complex situations using open data. Furthermore, I'm interested in learning new skills, collecting data, and playing with large datasets using open source and feely available tools (such as Python).

You can find out more about me here or through my blog.

FAQ

How often will you write? I don't have a particular schedule in mind but, I plan to write a post at least once or twice a week if I have the time to do so.

I like what you do, and I would like to contribute to this site. Are you open for guest blogging? The answer to this is a big yes. I would love to learn more about new topics (other than the ones mentioned above). That being said, I'm not (yet) in the position to pay others for their contribution. If you're interested in a guest post, following my email below.

Why is the site called "BrewingData"? Honestly, I'm terrible at picking names for things. The "Brewing" part was simply because I love coffee.

Is this another data science blog? Yes and no. The main focus of this blog is to use data-based techniques to help info others (a bit like, FiveThirtyEight, Guardian Data Blog and Our World in Data) If you're interested in the methods behind these results, why not follow my personal blog for more.
